“Coffee is one of the few products involving nature, people, machines and technology in any stage of its production, as well as sensory communication. A day without coffee would be an empty world!”

How to Make the Best Filter Coffee at Home Like a Pro: A Beginner’s Guide

Coffee lover dreaming of recreating your go-to café’s signature coffee in the comfort of your own kitchen? Say no more! With the right tools and a little know-how, you can take your coffee experience to new heights. In this easy-to-follow guide, we’ll take you step-by-step through everything you need to know to make the perfect cup of filter coffee where you love it most: at home. We promise it’s easier than you think, and well worth the effort!

Step 1: Pick Your Coffee Filter

First and foremost, you need to decide on the right coffee filter for you. It’s important to understand the differences between paper and metal options because, believe it or not, this choice is going to play a huge role in how your coffee tastes. If you’re all about that crisp and clean coffee, paper filters are the way to go. They trap most of the oils, giving you a smooth cup. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a little more body and flavor, we recommend metal filters because they let all those tasty oils right through, which enhances the richness of the flavors.

Step 2: Getting the Grind Right

Did you know that the grind of your coffee beans is pretty much a “make-or-break” deal? You want to aim for a medium grind that feels like sea salt in texture. If your coffee tastes too bitter, it’s likely your grind is too fine. Too sour? Go for a finer grind. Investing in a good quality burr grinder is key to achieving the perfect grind size, ensuring consistency and, as a result, a more balanced cup.

But the journey to the perfect cup of coffee starts before the grinding—it begins with selecting the right beans. Step 3: The Golden Coffee-to-Water Ratio

Want to learn the golden rule to achieve the perfect coffee? It’s 1 part coffee to 16 parts water or 60gr coffee to 1 liter water ratio. For a single cup, that’s about 2 tablespoons of coffee to 6 ounces of water. Feel free to adjust this ratio based on your taste preference. Want it stronger? Add a bit more coffee. Prefer it lighter? Just use a little less.

Step 4: The Right Temperature

If you’ve read our previous blog post on the importance of temperature when brewing coffee, then you already know that the optimal range is between 195°F and 205°F (90°C and 96°C). If the water’s too hot, you will over-extract the coffee, making it bitter. On the other hand, if the water is too cool, you’ll miss out on the full flavor potential, as the coffee will be under-extracted. No thermometer? No problem. Just let your boiling water sit for about 30 seconds before you start brewing.

Step 5: Choose Your Favorite Brewing Technique

For this article, we’ll use the Pour Over method as an example, as it gives you total control over all brewing variables. By manually pouring hot water over the coffee grounds, you can adjust the brewing time and water flow to obtain a coffee with bright and clean flavors.

Here’s how to do it right:

  • Prep Your Filter: No matter if you’re filter is paper or metal, the first thing to do before preparing your coffee is to rinse your filter with hot water to remove any residual taste.
  • Add Your Coffee: Place your filter in the dripper and add your ground coffee. Give it a gentle tap to even it out.
  • Let It Bloom: Pour a small amount of hot water over the ground coffee to saturate it evenly. Wait about 30 seconds. This process, called blooming, releases gases, and ensures better extraction.
  • Pour in Stages: Slowly pour the remaining water in a circular motion, starting from the center and working outwards, taking your time over a period of 2 to 3 minutes for a single cup.
