“Coffee is one of the few products involving nature, people, machines and technology in any stage of its production, as well as sensory communication. A day without coffee would be an empty world!”

The Different Types of Coffee Roasts

Introduction to Coffee Roasting

At Mystique Coffee, we believe that the secret to great coffee lies in its roasting. Our experts use proven techniques to skillfully enhance the natural characteristics of each bean, so that every sip meets the highest standards of quality. Here’s a closer look at the different types of roasting:

Light Roast

Light roast coffee is often preferred by those who prefer a milder coffee flavor. The beans are roasted just long enough to achieve a light brown color and no oil on the surface. This roast is typically used for milder coffees and retains most of the characteristics of the original coffee bean, including the flavors influenced by the coffee’s origin. Light roasts have higher acidity and are perfect for tasting the full vibrancy of the coffee’s natural flavors.

Medium Roast

Medium roast coffees are the perfect balance between light and dark roasts. They are roasted to a medium brown color, resulting in a stronger flavor than light roasts, but retaining more of the original brightness of the bean than darker roasts. Medium roasts have a balanced acidity, aroma and complexity, making them a favorite of North American coffee drinkers. They are often referred to as “American roasts” because of their popularity in the United States.

Medium-Dark Roast

When we roast our beans to a medium dark level, we aim to bring out a richer, darker flavor while still preserving some of the unique characteristics of the coffee’s origin. These beans will have some oil on the surface and a slightly bittersweet aftertaste. The flavors are more pronounced and the body of the coffee is more robust, making medium dark roasts ideal for those who appreciate deeper, more complex coffee notes.

Dark Roast

Dark roasts are for those who appreciate a bold, rich coffee experience. The beans are roasted until they are dark brown, almost black, with a shiny, oily surface. This level of roasting mutes the original flavors of the bean, but emphasizes the deep, rich tones of the roasting process itself. The acidity is much lower and the flavors tend to have notes of chocolate or caramel.
