“Coffee is one of the few products involving nature, people, machines and technology in any stage of its production, as well as sensory communication. A day without coffee would be an empty world!”

Why is water temperature important in coffee preparation?

Have you ever noticed that the coffee you make at home doesn’t quite taste the same as when you order one from your local café? Many factors come into play, but water temperature is an often-overlooked element. At Mystique Coffee, we’re passionate about the art of coffee making. Today, we’re going to take a look at the importance of water temperature and its crucial role in preparing a cup of coffee that will totally improve your morning routine at home.

A Fascinating Science

Making a good cup of coffee is as much science as it is art. Water isa solvent and as the hot water makes its way through the ground coffee, it begins a delicate process of extracting the compounds that define the flavors and aromas of your coffee. Water temperature has a significant impact throughout this phase.

If the water is too hot, it risks over-extracting and giving your coffee a bitter taste. If it’s not hot enough, your coffee will be dull and tasteless. So how do you find the right balance? Getting the right temperature to precisely extract the best flavour from your coffee is essential for a well-balanced, delicious cup.

How to Find the Ideal Infusion Temperature?

Although there is no such thing as a universal infusion temperature, experts agree that the ideal range is between 195- and 205-degrees Fahrenheit (90 and 96 degrees Celsius). This range preserves the coffee’s delicate flavours while avoiding the extraction of bitter, undesirable aromas.

However, different coffee varieties and roast levels may require minor adjustments to this temperature range. For example, lighter roasts may give better results at higher temperatures, while darker roasts require slightly lower temperatures. So, experiment until you find what works best for your coffee.

Adapting Your Preparation Technique

Using an automatic coffee maker often implies that your appliance is already set to the ideal water temperature for coffee extraction. However, if you opt for manual brewing methods such as the French press, pour-over or AeroPress, it becomes essential to keep a close eye on the water temperature. A useful tip is to let the water cool for a while after boiling, about a minute or two, before checking its temperature. With practice, you’ll learn to determine the perfect temperature to suit your taste preferences. Equipping yourself with a good kitchen thermometer will simplify this process and save you time.
