A Passion for Quality: Mystique Coffee’s Continuous Pursuit of Excellence
At Mystique Coffee, we have been providing coffee lovers with the finest specialty grade Arabica coffee for over two decades.
This designation is earned by fewer than 10% of coffee produced in the world, and it requires them to achieve the following high standards:
- Preferably be Arabica coffee
- Grown at high altitude
- It must be hand-picked with great care
- It must undergo a roasting process designed to highlight the terroir’s flavors and subtleties
Humble Beginnings
In 1998 Mystique Coffee started off small, with no employees and a roaster that could only process 20 kilos of coffee beans at a time. Our roastery was a modest 1200 square feet, but our vision was anything but small. Since the beginning, we have been dedicated to producing, importing, and distributing the best Fair trade coffee beans from all corners of the globe.
A Journey to the Perfect Cup
From the very beginning, the team at Mystique Coffee has been traveling regularly in search of supply sources that meet our high standards. The quality of green coffee, the raw material we use for coffee roasting, is influenced by many factors, such as the crop, soil, altitude, climatic conditions, variety, and picking period, as well as the processes and technology used in the country of origin. Through our selection of the best beans from around the world, we strive to deliver the finest coffee experience to our customers.
Harnessing Innovation for Sustainable Growth
Mystique Coffee has consistently been at the forefront of innovation since its inception.
As early as 1999, we began to import specialty fair trade and organic coffees, setting a new standard for sustainability and ethical practices. In 2002, we began a research and development initiative to design a new roaster, which was completed in 2005. This improved our roasting capacity and precision.
In 2003, we supported the start up of the “Let’s Talk Coffee” event, where roasters, quality controllers, farmer producers and administrators (Fair Trade and Organic Coffee Cooperatives) participated in a sharing and learning session. When the event was repeated the following year, attendance increased by twofold as a result of its success.
In November 2004, we delivered two mobile “aqua pulper” machines to Ethiopia as part of a joint venture with Colombia and with the help of the Dutch government.Following that initiative, Sidama Coffee Farmers Cooperatives Union acquired a large central machine that used six times less water, emitted less pollution, and was four times more productive than conventional machines.
With the official opening of our research and development laboratory in 2005, we developed new methods and standards of filter and espresso brewing.
Never Stop Learning
Mystique Coffee has always been committed to continuous training in coffee roasting, brewing, and quality evaluation.
During 1998, our team members became certified as Golden Cup technicians and became official members of the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), the world’s largest specialty coffee association dedicated to promoting coffee excellence through education and information exchange, with over 7,000 members worldwide. The team has participated in several coffee-evaluation workshops hosted by the SCAA since then and continue to do so today.
In 2000, we travelled to Costa Rica to study coffee varieties at the CATIE Center (Central American Tropical Institute and Education).
In 2001, we were one of the initial founding members of the Roasters Guild and took part in the first sensory aptitude test at originconducted by the SCAA and COCLA, a fair trade and organic coffee cooperative from Peru.
In 2005, we launched the first French-language training course on coffee brewing and extracting techniques and barista work in North America.
A Legacy of Excellence
With our growing team, we’ve expanded our roastery to 17000 square feet today, which allows us to roast and deliver on order substantial quantities of coffee every year. As we continue to grow and innovate, we now offer over 18 types of certified fair trade and organic coffees from 12 different countries.
As a licensee of Fair trade Canada, Mystique Coffee ensures safe working conditions, fair prices for farmers, and protection of their farming environmental. The beans we use are organically grown (which means no pesticides are used in cultivation or processing).
From sourcing premium beans to roasting them to perfection, our coffee is more than just a drink – it’s a journey. Whatever your taste, come experience the world of Mystique Coffee for yourself!
